Summer Intensive 2018
During our first week of summer intensives, we welcomed many guest teachers including Chloe Arnold, James Washington, Billy Bell, Ross Katen, and Jamal Story. We also appreciated our alumni who came back to visit and even took some classes. Our students participated in many challenging classes as well as our older students engaed in a discussion with our alumni and guests as they talked about the professional dance world and its different aspects.
NYCDA Nationals 2018
Senior Company Members, Charizma Lawrence and Camille Phelps, and Teen Company Members, Xavier Logan and Niya Smith, went to New York City to compete for NYCDA's National Outstanding Dancer Competition and NYCDA's College Scholarship Foundation. During competition, Niya and Xavier received a Platinum Award, Outstanding Choreography Award, and 3rd Overall Highest Score for their duet, "Infinity", choreographed by Billy Bell. From the College Scholarship Foundation, Camille received 76K and Charizma received 80K from University of Hartford. Both received $72K from Point Park University. Finally, Camille received $40K from Southern Methodist University and Charizma received $32.4K from Montclair State University. Charizma also placed in the Top 25 for the Senior Outstanding Dancer competition and Xavier placed 2nd Runner Up in the Teen Male Outstanding Dancer category.
Also while in New York, Xavier and Niya competed in the Capezio Model Search contest and won spots as official Capezio Models, including a special photoshoot with a professional photographer.
The Dance Awards Orlando 2018
We had a successful time at The Dance Awards! Three of our dancers, Christian Butts, Xavier Logan, and Imani Spann, made it to the final rounds of the Best Dancer Competition. Christian was in the Top 20 Teen Male Best Dancer Category and Xavier made it to the Top 10 Teen Male Best Dancer Improv Competition. Imani made it to the Top 4 Senior Females and placed 3rd Runner Up out of hundreds of senior girls. In regards to competition, Niya Smith won for a Judge’s Pick and 9th Place Overall High Score for her solo, "Numb", by our alumnus, Wendell Gray. Imani Spann won a Judge’s Pick in the Senior Solo division and Overall 8th Place for her solo, "Enigma", choreographed by Wendell Gray. We recieved 5 Judge's Picks for our group dances including, Heights of the Depths (choreographed by Wendell Gray), Bag Lady (choreographed by Martha Nichols), Where My Eyes Can See (choreographed by Brooke Pierotti), Batuqué (choreographed by Fransisco Gella), and Catch My Swag (choreographed by Randi Kemper and Hefa Tuita). In the High Score Awards we won 2nd Place Overall Hip Hop (Catch My Swag), 2nd Place Overall Lyrical (Bag Lady), 5th Place Overall Extended Line (Catch my Swag), 4th Place Overall Jazz (Where My Eyes Can See), 4th Place Overall Specialty (Batuque), 3rd Place Overall Lyrical (We Might Feel Unsound).
